Dave and Mark enjoying the people and off road vehicles at Overland Expo West
Over the past 15 years covering the automotive industry, I’ve had the privilege of attending just about every major event — from SEMA to international auto shows and high-profile press launches. But for the past decade, one event had continually eluded me: Overland Expo West. Whether due to scheduling conflicts or unpredictable weather, I never made it. That is, until now. In 2025, I finally booked my flight from Nashville, Tennessee, to Flagstaff, Arizona, and checked this off-road bucket list item off my list.

When I think of the early days of Overland Expo, I picture larger-than-life vehicles like the Mercedes Unimog, Land Rover Defender, and the timeless Toyota Land Cruiser — icons that inspired countless adventurers to explore not just their backyards, but the world. Today, thanks to the booming aftermarket industry and the availability of gear like rooftop tents, Overland Expo West has helped make it easier than ever to transform your daily driver into a full-blown expedition rig.
First Impressions
From the moment I arrived, it was clear: Overland Expo West is a gearhead’s paradise. An abundance of manufacturers filled the grounds, showcasing cutting-edge gear — from rooftop tents and pull-behind camper trailers to the latest in recovery equipment. Major players like Toyota, Ford, and GMC were front and center, each with dedicated areas to highlight their newest off-road technologies and vehicles.

Why Flagstaff?
The team behind Overland Expo clearly knew what they were doing when they chose Flagstaff, Arizona as their base. It’s just remote enough to feel like an escape, yet still easily accessible via Interstate 40. The expo grounds, a repurposed National Guard training facility, is only a few miles from downtown Flagstaff, making it convenient for those flying in or arriving by train via Amtrak. Plus, the downtown area offers great local restaurants and an impressive lineup of craft breweries.

The Vehicles and the Vibe
One of the most refreshing things about Overland Expo West was the variety of rigs. From classic 1970s Ford F-100 pickups to modern Toyota 4Runners, the prevailing attitude seemed to be: run what you’ve got. No one cared how fancy or expensive your setup was — it was all about the love of the lifestyle. The community vibe was palpable. Everyone was friendly, helpful, and clearly thrilled to be there, making the entire experience incredibly welcoming.

Final Thoughts
Whether you’re already deep into the overlanding lifestyle or just starting to explore the world of van life and off-road travel, Overland Expo is a must-attend. With five regional events across the country — Overland SoCal, Overland West, Overland Pacific Northwest, Overland Mountain West, and Overland East — there’s no excuse not to join in. Trust me, it’s worth the trip.
