Toyota 4Runner – Better Value than we thought?

Dave Boyd May 11, 2025
The sun has not set on the Toyota 4Runner

In the automotive world, when you think of an icon, the Toyota 4Runner is the definition of one. Originally built as an affordable off-road SUV, it has evolved over the years into a more premium yet still highly capable off-roader.

The sun has not set on the Toyota 4Runner

To meet modern emission standards, Toyota now equips the base 4Runner with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 278 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque. For those looking for more power, Toyota offers the i-FORCE MAX hybrid engine, delivering 326 horsepower and an impressive 465 lb-ft of torque. Both engines are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The introduction of a turbocharged four-cylinder engine surprised many long-time fans. Some remain cautious about turbo technology and are adopting a wait-and-see approach before making a purchase.

Where the all-new 4Runner truly shines is inside. Toyota has completely modernized the interior, leaving behind outdated tech. The base trim includes an 8-inch touchscreen, with an available upgrade to a 14-inch display. A digital gauge cluster starts at 7 inches, with an optional 12.3-inch version. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are now standard, along with multiple USB-C ports. Features like a digital key system, wireless charging, and connected services round out the infotainment offerings.

One major plus: the 4Runner retains physical knobs and buttons alongside the touchscreen. Many drivers prefer tactile controls for climate and other essential functions, and it’s great to see Toyota keeping these in a modern vehicle.

Safety and driver assistance features are robust, including Toyota’s full suite of tech: pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert with steering assist, dynamic radar cruise control, lane tracing assist, automatic high beams, and proactive driving assist.

At first glance, the new 4Runner may seem pricey, but when compared to similarly equipped rivals like the Jeep Wrangler and Ford Bronco, its value is clear.

For off-road enthusiasts, the 4Runner is ready to go. Available features include Multi-Terrain Select, Crawl Control, and a rear locking differential. TRD Pro and Trailhunter trims add stabilizer disconnect mechanisms for even greater capability.

If you’ve been a fan of the classic 4Runner, do yourself a favor and check out the all-new model—now available in showrooms.
