Nissan came out swinging this year at the SEMA Auto Show, unveiling two bold off-road concepts that could easily headline any adventure rig wish list — the Dune Patrol and the Rapid Runner. Both builds highlight what the Armada and Frontier platforms are truly capable of when Nissan lets its engineers and NISMO division have a little fun.

Dune Patrol
For decades, off-road fans in the U.S. have begged Nissan to bring over the Patrol — a global legend known for its durability and off-road dominance. While Nissan still avoids using the Patrol name here, the 2024 Armada now rides on the same global Patrol platform. This concept finally gives us a glimpse of what we’ve been missing.

The Dune Patrol sports a rugged khaki exterior, NISMO 18-inch AXIS beadlock wheels, and 37-inch Yokohama GEOLANDAR M/T G003 tires. High-clearance metal bumpers, a swing-out spare tire carrier, and Nissan’s brand concept roof rack give it a commanding, adventure-ready look. Inside, clever integrated storage solutions show attention to real-world usability — something often missing in concept builds.

The only confusing part? Nissan continues to use the Patrol name for the concept, even though the U.S. equivalent is badged as the Armada. Still, the execution is flawless.

Rapid Runner Frontier
Partnering with PowerNation TV, Nissan’s Rapid Runner Frontier is a concept that proves how far the midsize pickup can go when the brand fully commits to performance and design.

The truck features a NISMO roof and bed rack system capable of carrying multiple kayaks, prototype 17-inch ASCEND wheels, and 37-inch Yokohama GEOLANDAR X-MT tires. Underneath, suspension and axle upgrades borrowed from the Titan widen the stance and add the muscle needed for serious trail work.
This build shows the potential Nissan has — yet rarely brings to production. Imagine if the Pro-4X or a new Pro-4XR Frontier rolled off the factory floor with even half this capability. It would instantly go head-to-head with the Ford Ranger Raptor and Toyota’s new Tacoma TRD Pro.

If You Build It, They Will Come
The NISMO brand has deep motorsports roots, and these two concepts remind us that Nissan still has the DNA to build something truly special. U.S. truck and SUV fans have been teased for years with overseas-only models and concept parts that never materialize. If Nissan brought even a fraction of these SEMA builds to showrooms, it would be a win for both the brand and the off-road community.
Until then, the Dune Patrol and Rapid Runner give us hope — and something to dream about.
