The midsize truck wars are heating up once again.

This week, Nissan announced the new 2027 Frontier Sport Edition, a trim designed to bring some of the rugged styling and off-road-inspired capability from the PRO-4X to more everyday drivers.
Now heading into its fifth model year, the Frontier continues to remain one of the more traditional trucks in the segment, and it’s clear Nissan is not backing down from the competition anytime soon. Built off the SV trim, the new Sport Edition adds a more aggressive appearance package while still retaining the Frontier’s proven naturally aspirated V6 platform.

From the outside, the truck gains black 17-inch off-road wheels wrapped in 265/70R17 Hankook Dynapro all-terrain tires, along with aluminum skid plates that hint at its off-road intentions. Nissan also adds LED fog lights and accent lighting that give the truck a more athletic and modern appearance.
As we look further around the truck, there’s also new “Sport” badging featuring a highlighter yellow accent color. In our opinion, this design choice feels slightly out of place. The bright accent and font styling don’t quite flow with the Frontier’s otherwise rugged and straightforward design language.

Inside, the cabin remains very familiar Nissan territory. The overall layout carries over from previous model years, but the Sport Edition does receive unique yellow stitching and trim accents throughout the interior. Yellow highlights can be found on the seats, door panels, grab handles, and dashboard stitching, helping separate the trim from the standard SV model.

Overall, we applaud Nissan for continuing to push the Frontier toward new audiences. This feels very much like a value-focused trim package aimed directly at buyers considering trucks like the Toyota Tacoma. While it may not be a full hardcore off-road package like the Frontier PRO-4X, the Sport Edition gives buyers a more aggressive look without forcing them into the higher-priced trims.
And in today’s truck market, that may be exactly what Nissan needs
